Hey everyone, I’m Rachel, the author of this blog.

I spent the last year and a half working as an Au Pair in Germany and Denmark. I encountered lots of crazy things, met some really interesting people and learned a lot more about myself. Being away from the United States for that period of time taught me a lot about life and forced me to recognize a lot of things about people and places that I may not have learned otherwise. I’m back in the United States now with a yearning to get back out into the world and experience more of life.

I hope you enjoy this blog! And please leave comments because I love knowing that someone is actually reading my writing and is hopefully causing people to think!

    I love your blog.
I’m about to take a trip to Germany, I was brushing up on my German language skills when i came across your writings. Fantastic.
Quick note, “Ich verstehe nur Bahnhof” means that someone couldn’t understand a thing. You write just the opposite, that something is well understood. Am I mistaken?
Anyway, i found your blog very useful and i thank you for your time!
    sincerely, arnis

Hi! Thanks so much for reading my blog. I am so happy to hear that you enjoy it. I have unfortunately been a little lazy with my writings, but I have a lot more things to write about Germany so keep checking back! And, yes, I think that you are right. “Ich verstehe nur Bahnhof” means that someone didn’t understand anything.
I hope you will have a great trip to Germany when you go and good luck with the language!

Rachel, I enjoyed reading the blog, particularly your adventures in Denmark. Wow, such a horrible situation for the au pairs from the Philippines. Would you mind writing me privately at lawfrog@gmail.com? I have some questions for you about life in Germany. Thanks!

I work for the Philippine government that caters to Filipino au pairs and conducts orientation seminar for them before departure from the country. I wonder if you can share to me in private who are the Filipinos being abused or taken advantage of by Danish host families so that we can take action on it and request our embassy in Oslo, Norway who has jurisdiction with Denmark to blacklist those families violating the au pair contracts they signed with the Filipino au pairs.

Hi Rachel, I know eaxctly what you are describing. It is so sad. I would love to talk to you if you had time. I have been working hard to change the au pair situation in DK by having created the first high profile nanny agency (registered work for professional nannies and babysitters – all registered and paid well) and also now working on something else related to au pairs. let me know if you have time for a chat.
